Maintaining an Ethical Culture in Challenging Times

Under normal circumstances, doing what you know is right is relatively easy. But we haven’t been in a normal business environment for over two years. Changes in business models, supply chain issues, inflation, vaccine mandate or no, recruiting, and staffing – and the list seems to get longer every day. At what point do “desperate times call for desperate measures”?

How do we decide between fair and equitable? If we offer bonuses to recruit new staff, should we give bonuses to those we hired last year who didn’t receive a bonus? How do we ensure that we don’t ignore remote workers in favor of in-office workers?

Most CPAs are ethical most of the time, but staying ethical is hard.  It gets even harder when we are under stress and unusual circumstances. Stress saps our strength and our will, leaving us exhausted. In addition, the unusual circumstances of COVID have upended our normal systems and internal controls.
In this session, we will explore the effects of the current economic realities on our organizations. We will discuss ways to deal with the issues of employee recruitment, engagement, and retention that are both ethical end effective.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify current ethical stressors on organizations
  • Select ethical approaches to recruit, engage, and retain employees
  • Determine methods to maintain an ethical culture in a hybrid work environment
