SoHo Development Creates New Neighborhood in Tampa

In April, our chapter was scheduled to visit Armature Works and hear from Chas Bruck, founder and principal of SoHo Capital, the development company behind The Heights. Unfortunately, this event was cancelled due to social distancing measures put in place in response to COVID-19.

We hope to reschedule this event for our 2020-2021 Program Year. In the meantime, we’d like to highlight SoHo Capital and the fantastic work they are doing in Tampa Bay.

Master-Planned Development
In 2015, SoHo Capital broke ground on The Heights – a 39-acre mixed-use development on the Hillsborough River, just north of downtown Tampa. Designed to be a new mixed-use urban neighborhood, The Heights mixes retail, entertainment, office, hotel and residential in a walkable riverfront district.

Since breaking ground, SoHo Capital has completed an extensive renovation of the former TECO streetcar maintenance facility and created a 73,000 square foot mixed-use commercial space known as Armature Works. The building houses Heights Public Market, multiple event spaces, a co-work space and multiple restaurants and bars.

SoHo Capital also completed construction on The Pearl, a 314-unit apartment building just north of Palm Avenue with over 28,000-sqaure-feet of retail space on the ground floor. The next phase of development, which is currently underway, will bring 300,000-square-feet of office space and 42,000-square-feet of retail to the district with Heights Union.

Response to COVID-19
In response to COVID-19, Armature Works temporarily closed its doors to the public on March 16. And after a month-long closure, Heights Public Market reopened for contactless take-out in the form of curbside pick-up and delivery. Looking for ways to keep the community engaged, the company also launched Armature Works at Home, which featured weekly events such as live music, fitness classes, cooking tutorials and more on social media.

Throughout the closure, Bay 3 – the co-work space located within Armature Works – also remained open, following increased sanitation protocols and providing displaced workers a place to work at a safe social distance. In a time of immense uncertainty, SoHo Capital found ways to support its vendors and the Tampa Bay community.

We hope to hear more about this and the development of The Heights at an upcoming meeting.
