The new year brought new uncertainty. While the economy is producing more than it did prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, millions remain out of the workforce, some supply chains continue to have delays, and price increases limited to certain sectors in late 2021 broadened and deepened. We will look at the economic outlook for 2022 from the perspective of small businesses. A large portion of small businesses were sustained during the pandemic by fiscal support administered by the Small Business Administration, most frequently the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). As these programs sunset, will new demand and financing meet the financial needs of small businesses? How are credit markets responding to the needs of small businesses? We will use economic data and insights from business leaders to shed light on these questions, especially new findings from the Federal Reserve System’s Small Business Credit Survey.

Presenter: Alex Marre, PhD, is a Policy Analyst with the Federal Reserve System’s national Small Business Credit Survey team led from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Immediately prior to joining the Cleveland Fed, Alex was a Regional Economist in Baltimore for the Richmond Fed.
