Redmond Rev Rec Review Coming Wednesday

by FEI Daily Staff

Industry executives and accounting professionals will converge on Redmond, Washington this week to discuss the newly converged revenue recognition standard that is entering the critical implementation phase.

The meeting will take place at Microsoft’s Redmond Training Center on Wednesday, September 10, between 11:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Although the converged standard received its long-awaited approval by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in May, how and when the rules will be implemented remains up for debate. Critical questions around such issues as gross vs. net revenue: sales-based and usage-based royalties in contracts and impairment testing of capitalized contract costs remain to be answered.

Specifically, how regulators will push the transition within U.S. companies is especially murky given the announcement this month by U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Jim Schnurr has been appointed as the new chief accountant. Schnurr joins the SEC just as it begins the long road of rev rec implementation.

Speakers from Microsoft Corp., KPMG LLP, Oracle Corp., Financial Executives International and Leeyo Software will present at the half-day meeting to discuss the future implementation challenges of the new standard.
