“Under the Influence: Materialistic Buyer Behaviors in a Social Media World”

The Internet and especially social media have revolutionized many aspects of everyday life, including the way in which businesses and consumers buy goods. For perspective, consider the following statistics:
As of May 2019,

  • The total worldwide population is 7.7 billion

  • The internet has 4.4 billion users

  • There are 3.499 billion active social media users

  • On average, people have 7.6 social media accounts

The role and importance consumers place on possessions and consumption, namely, materialism, is an important area of study for marketeers. Past research has suggested that users’ consumption of traditional media is related to their level of materialism because the media provides consumers with values, norms, and behaviors-all central aspects of consumption. In this lecture, we will investigate whether materialism, an important construct of consumer behavior, is a consequence of social media usage.
