The U.S. cannabis industry is growing rapidly, now over $25 billion annually (not including an even larger unregulated market) and is now one of the largest consumer products (surpassing donuts!). The medical portion by itself is over $10 billion, helping people with pain, sleep and a variety of other issues. Cannabis is now legal for recreational use in 18 states with more expected to come on board in 2022. Not everyone realizes that Chicago is a hub to the industry, with 5 of the largest MSO’s (multi-state operators) having their roots here.
 
While deemed an essential industry by the U.S. government, cannabis operators work in a very challenging environment, with limited access to banking, extremely high taxes, limited distribution and restricted access to services where a number of larger players sit on the sidelines for now. It is arguably one of the toughest industries to be a CFO or other C-suite roles.
