The prices for gas, autos and lumber have all attracted attention over the last few months. Measures of inflation are growing quickly causing some to worry about long-term price stability. What’s behind upward pressure on prices? Pent-up demand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions have all contributed to elevated inflation expectations. Using national data and the Richmond Fed’s surveys of businesses we will explore what we know about price increases right now. We will also discuss how long-term factors such as market power and price transparency that could help exert downward pressure on prices in the long run. Join us to learn about inflation and why it matters!
