Derek Gillespie

Derek Gillespie is a partner in Deloitte’s Accounting and Reporting Advisory Group (ARA). Within ARA, Mr. Gillespie leads the Acquisitions and Divestitures service offering, is a leader of the National SPAC team, and provides on-call accounting support services. In those roles, he assists clients with the application and implementation of complex accounting and reporting matters.

From 2014 to 2018, he was a partner in Deloitte’s National Office Accounting and Reporting Services Group and focused on financial instruments, fair value measurement, structured transactions, consolidation, and stock compensation matters. For those topics, he cleared consultations for audit engagement teams, developed Deloitte’s interpretive views, and delivered training for Deloitte and client professionals. 

From 2012 to 2014, he was a Professional Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant of the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he consulted with registrants and the Division of Corporation Finance on matters related to financial instruments, fair value measurement, consolidation, business combinations and long lived assets. He also consulted with other divisions of the SEC, including Investment Management, Trading and Markets, and Enforcement, on accounting and reporting matters. In addition, Mr. Gillespie worked with other regulators, the FASB and the IASB on standard-setting projects. 

Prior to his fellowship, he spent 2 years working in Deloitte’s Global IFRS and Offerings Services (GIOS) group in London. In GIOS, he advised audit and advisory clients on technical accounting issues.  In addition, he worked with foreign private issuers on SEC reporting rules and regulations. 

From 2008 to 2010, he worked in Deloitte’s Financial Accounting and Reporting Services (FARS) group and was based in New York. In that role, he assisted attest and advisory clients with the application and implementation of complex accounting standards. Prior to working in FARS, he participated in the Manager Development Program in the Accounting and Reporting Services Group in Deloitte’s National Office.  He started his career in the Parsippany, New Jersey audit practice and primarily served manufacturing clients.
